Moke Lake is in the Otago region of South Island. It is one of the easiest ways to get out of nearby Queenstown for some exercise and nice scenery, while avoiding the sometimes crowded shores of Lake Wakatipu.

Time

DOC estimates the loop takes 2-3 hours.

AllTrails users report an average of 1 hour 51 minutes.

It took me around 1 hour 20 minutes, without substantive breaks. I was in a hurry, because it was the afternoon already, yet I still wanted to fit in one more walk afterward: the nearby Mt Crichton Loop Track.

Route

Round-trip, AllTrails reports an elevation gain of 182 meters and a length of 6.9 kilometers.

This is a simple one. I drove to the Moke Lake campsite, walked counter-clockwise around the lake, and ended up back where I started. There was a short stretch along the road on the eastern shore of the lake, but otherwise I was on dedicated tracks.

The track was muddy in some places when I went. Part of it is on a boardwalk above a marsh, along the southern shore.

All the slopes felt gentle.

For an experienced hiker, this track is a good off-day activity.

If 1 is an easy track, and 4 is using hands and feet on exposed rocks, I give this track a 1. Worse mud could change that.
